Does LASIK Hurt?

It’s not unusual for patients who want improved vision to be apprehensive, especially about whether or not laser vision correction is painful. If you live in or around Sacramento, LASIK practitioner Stephen Wilmarth, M.D., can address your concerns.

One of the major misconceptions about LASIK is that the procedure is painful. This is untrue.

Before your LASIK surgery, Dr. Wilmarth will administer a local anesthetic in the form of eye drops. These drops will numb your eye and block any pain response. Though you might feel slight pressure in or around your eye during the procedure, you won’t experience pain.

Though the LASIK procedure itself isn’t painful, possible side effects after surgery can lead to feelings of irritation in or around the eye. You might experience:

  • Mild discomfort

  • Dryness or itchiness

  • Redness in the eyes

  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)

These LASIK side effects tend to subside quickly, and some patients might not experience them at all. Before undergoing LASIK, Dr. Wilmarth will review potential complications and recommend steps you can take before and after the surgery to avoid discomfort.

To find out more about how LASIK can correct your vision without causing you pain, please contact Wilmarth Eye and Laser Center or call 916-850-3060 today to schedule your initial consultation. Dr. Wilmarth welcomes patients throughout the Sacramento area.
