How LASIK treats Nearsightedness

LASIK eye surgery can improve the unclear near vision caused by nearsightedness (also called "myopia"). The procedure does so by reshaping the improperly curved cornea of a myopic eye.

The cornea is the clear tissue on the front on the eye that your contact lens rest on. It is responsible for focusing distant light on the retina.

If you are nearsighted, the cornea of your eye has greater curvature than eyes with normal vision. Because of the improperly shaped cornea, light that enters the eye is not correctly focused on the retina, which results in blurry near vision.

During LASIK, the cornea of a nearsighted eye is reshaped by removing some of the tissue with a laser. The new corneal shape properly focuses light on the retina and allows you to see clearly at all distances.

During a complimentary consultation with board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Stephen Wilmarth, Dr. Wilmarth can examine your eyes and inform you of all of your options for vision improvement. He can determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK and whether there are any alternatives you should consider, such as the Visian ICL implantable lens. Dr. Wilmarth and our entire eye care staff want to help you achieve your best vision, and we can help you decide whether LASIK or another procedure is the right way to improve unclear vision caused by nearsightedness.
