What is a Cataract?
A cataract forms in the lens of the eye when the proteins in the lens begin to break down and interfere with the passage of light. To see clearly, the lens must precisely focus light to form a clear image on the retina. A cataract scatters the light entering the patient's eye, preventing sharp vision and clear images. During cataract surgery performed by Dr. Stephen Wilmarth at Wilmarth Eye and Laser Center in Roseville, CA, the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens.
Cataracts may be brought about by:
- Long-term exposure to sunlight without sunglasses
- A diet lacking in vitamins and minerals
"The staff was extremely professional and exceeded every expectation I had. I’ve worn glasses for ten years and now have 20/10 vision. I would highly recommend them to anyone who has ever thought about getting the procedure done."- T.B. / Facebook / Mar 12, 2018
"Dr Wilmarth is exceptionally intelligent. He is professional and caring. His office is organized and friendly. I have recommended him."- Anonymous / Healthgrades / Oct 27, 2019
"Dr. Wilmarth did my LASIK in January of 2019. They made it easy to go through. My results are excellent. I have recommended Dr. Wilmarth to my friends and colleagues whom ask why I no longer wear glasses."- C.P. / Yelp / Jun 24, 2019
"Thank you Dr Wilmarth! 3 years later and still 20/15 and no dry eyes and no headaches."- S.N. / Yelp / Mar 13, 2019
"My wife had 20/650 vision in one eye, and 20/750 in the other. We went in for evaluation, and Dr. Wilmarth recommended we start with an ICL procedure, and then "fine-tune" that with Lasik if necessary. His entire staff demonstrated the highest levels of professionalism and kindness. Colette in particular was a joy to work with. Throughout the entire process the communication was clear, thorough, kind, and timely. My wife now has 20/20 vision and she couldn't be happier. If you are considering an eye procedure, this is the place to get it done. Everything from the professionalism of the staff, to the human kindness, to the results were 5/5 star. Bravo, team, bravo!"- D.C. / Yelp / Mar 08, 2019
Prevention of Cataracts
Dr. Wilmarth will help patients achieve their best eye health and vision. If patients are looking for ways to protect their vision, he can help them reduce their risk of developing cataracts. Once a cataract has progressed, it can’t be reversed, so prevention is extremely important. Sometimes, a cataract is the result of another medical condition or an inherited genetic trait. But in other cases, there are ways to prevent cataracts and protect the vision. Patients can do this by:
- Scheduling regular eye exams
- Wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays
- Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals
- Not smoking or drinking excessively
Evaluation & Diagnosis
If patients think they may have cataracts, Dr. Wilmarth can diagnose the condition and treat it. This generally involves performing a retinal exam, where Dr. Wilmarth will insert drops into the eyes to help dilate the pupils and allow him better visibility of the retina. A device such as a slit lamp or ophthalmoscope will be used to help magnify the back of the eye and detect any cataracts. Cataract surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with an intraocular lens. Dr. Wilmarth has extensive experience in this procedure and can help patients choose an intraocular lens that meets their needs.
