LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is the most technologically advanced method of vision correction available to patients today. This refractive surgery procedure offered at Wilmarth Eye and Laser Center in Roseville, CA involves creating a thin flap in the cornea of the eye, and then precisely reshaping underlying corneal tissue with a surgical laser to correct visual errors. The result is long-lasting, clearer eyesight with no need for glasses or contact lenses any longer. Our board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Wilmarth can take the time to meet with every patient and discuss their needs and goals.
Types of LASIK
There are many options to choose from when considering laser vision correction. One of the most important aspects to understand before getting LASIK surgery is knowing the difference between a blade (traditional) and bladeless procedure. The difference between LASIK with or without a blade refers to the technology used to create a thin, hinged flap in the cornea. Once the flap is created, Dr. Wilmarth reshapes the corneal tissue underneath with a precision surgical laser to correct refractive errors affecting the vision.
Traditional LASIK uses a small surgical instrument called a microkeratome blade to cut the flap. After the flap is lifted and corneal tissue adjusted, the flap is put back in place to heal.
Bladeless LASIK, on the other hand, is an advanced version of the procedure. Instead of a microkeratome blade, Dr. Wilmarth uses a device called a femtosecond laser. The femtosecond laser creates a flap by breaking apart cells in the cornea rather than cutting into them. As with traditional LASIK, Dr. Wilmarth will put the flap back in place to heal once the bladeless LASIK procedure is over.
"After a couple of less than positive Lasik consultations with other doctors I scheduled an appointment with the staff at Wilmarth Eye & laser. The office is clean, well staffed & very professional in appearance. I was seen almost immediately upon arrival. I meet with Amanda who performed the eye exam & answered all of my questions in great detail. She was very professional, polite & seemed to enjoy her job. After Amanda completed the exam I meet with Dr. Wilmarth, again very professional, knowledgeable & easy to talk to. He seemed like a person that also enjoyed his job. I have not made the decision to have the Lasik surgery as of yet, but when I do it will be with Dr. Wilmarth & his staff. Thanks again!!!"- M.L. / Yelp / Apr 29, 2015
"Fantastic Dr. and staff. I had LASIK here several years ago and still love my vision without glasses. I trust and recommend Dr Wilmarth!"- A.S. / Yelp / Apr 21, 2015
"Fantastic experience throughout the pre-op, the procedure itself, and the couple of post-op appointments I've had so far. I went in for moderate to severe hyperopia (far-sightedness), so I would get heavy eye fatigue and lose focus when reading text or small print for any longer than a few minutes. After the Lasik, I now have 20/15 visual acuity and can read for hours without eye fatigue. While it is a significant financial outlay, I was not looking for the discount-chain "99 cent store" type of place to operate on my eyes; I was looking for the best of the best, and I can confidently say that is what you get if you go to Wilmarth Eye and Laser. Thank you again doc!Nick"- N.R. / Yelp / Oct 19, 2017

The surgery center is impeccable with all of the latest and greatest technology. Dr. Wilmarth and his staff do everything possible to make you feel comfortable. I am seeing 20/10 now!!! I highly recommend making Dr. Wilmarth your Ophthalmologist!"- S.M. / Yelp / Apr 11, 2017
"I had lasik done by Dr Wilmarth over 10 years ago, and it was a great decision! It took me a long time to make that decision, but Dr Wilmarth's skill, the clean office, and friendly staff convinced me. I had 20/20 vision the very next morning at my first post op appointment! I would definitely recommend this office to anyone interested in lasik."- L.R. / Yelp / Mar 28, 2017
What to Expect
Performed on an outpatient basis, LASIK takes roughly 15 minutes to complete. Once the procedure is over, Dr. Wilmarth will reposition the flap back in place so it can heal naturally. LASIK surgery addresses refractive errors in the eye where the cornea doesn’t effectively focus light on the retina.
Depending on the type of LASIK treatment performed, the process will vary slightly. Dr. Wilmarth prefers to use bladeless LASIK at his Sacramento area office, using the Ziemer laser system to create the flap and finishing with the WaveLight® EX500 Excimer laser. After years of performing laser eye surgery, Dr. Wilmarth has found that the bladeless procedure creates a better flap, leading to key benefits like:
- Improved LASIK results
- Reduced risk of complications
- Less need for revision surgery as patients get older
In addition to long-lasting vision correction, LASIK is very safe and boasts one of the highest success rates of any surgical procedure. Studies place patient satisfaction as high as 98%. Other benefits include:
- Almost immediate vision correction results
- Minimal downtime after the procedure
- A virtually painless procedure
Correcting vision with LASIK can not only change how patients see, but makes it easier to pursue hobbies, athletic activities, and career endeavors more freely without the inconvenience posed by glasses or contacts.
